Why you should stop trying to be something you’re not

This is a blog post that I have wanted to write for a while. In this post I want to share with you a little bit about my journey on social media, specifically Instagram. I’m a bit of an Instagram veteran and Clean Eats Charlotte has been around for over four years now – where on earth has that time gone?! Although I have been around for so long, for the past few years I have had to put my social media dreams and ambitions on hold whilst I pursued an intense career in the City. Unfortunately this meant that I had very little time to continue working on my social media and producing content that I was happy with. At one point, I was so incredibly close to packing it all in and deleting Clean Eats Charlotte for good. However, a very good friend of mine talked me out of it and so I slowly and steadily plodded along, producing content every now and again.

Anyway, that’s enough of my Instagram story for now. Let’s get back on topic…

Today, there are many of you who aspire to have a large following on social media and it might be something that you’d like to pursue as a career. Compared to four years ago, social media is such a saturated market and there are millions of social media users which makes it so difficult to differentiate yourself and stand out from the crowd.

I fell into a trap. I fell into THAT trap. What is popular? What accounts are people following and talking about? Why was my account slowing down? I felt confused, frustrated and sometimes upset. I thought that if I moulded myself into a fitness blogger, a raw food blogger or a [insert other type of popular blogger here] then maybe my audience would grow again? I understood that because of my demanding job I was unable to post delicious pictures that often, but I still questioned why my account wasn’t as popular as it used to be. The problem is that I am really NOT a fitness/raw food etc. blogger! It is just not what I do. I don’t have the ‘required physique’ to model sports clothing or slip into the latest sports bra (I definitely have too much going on in that department…). It got to the stage where I was fed up with trying to be something I was not. People didn’t follow me because they wanted to see me in my sports wear. They followed me because they enjoyed my healthy recipes and artistic flare.

I am ultimately a food blogger who loves baking and beautiful things! I enjoy photography, I enjoy art and I enjoy delicious and healthy food. THAT’S what I am good at. So ‘ya know what? I am going to blooming well carry on posting my scrummy, healthy recipes and taking pictures of my food with flowers in the background because that’s what I have always done and that’s what makes me happy and proud. I have got to the stage where the number of ‘followers’ I have does not define me or my worth on social media. I am so unbelievably grateful for each and every one of you that follows my journey, but I am not going to let that number affect my mood or the content that I post.

Let’s all start being a bit more authentic and stop worrying about that little number on the top of our page. I started my account because I LOVE sharing my recipes with you all and inspiring you to eat healthier foods for your body and your mind. That makes me happy and I would encourage you to do what makes you happy too.

I hope this post inspires you to STOP following the crowd and continue doing what you are good at. We are all unique and bring something different. Please do not feel as though you have to be like the most ‘popular’ social media influencer at the time. If you’re not a fitness gal, then do not fear! People will love you for YOU. You be unique. You follow your heart. You do you.

Have a wonderful week.
